And the chroot is stored in a .tar.gz.

Ehm, no.
It's just the same as pbuilder, except that it uses cow
(copy-on-write) and the chroot is just a directory.
Which means - same to use as pbuilder, same config, and much faster
(since the "tar xfz" is replaced by a "cp -...").
