Development environment

Hi all,

I would like to contribute to FSO (especially the user interface).
However, I didn't find any guides on how to create a suitable
development environment. It would be great if someone could create such
a document. It would also be very cool if a ready to deploy vmware (or
even better in terms of open-source: virtualbox) image existed that had
everything pre-setup in order to get coding (with only a git pull for
updates).
