I didn't mention (in case you do want to verify cause):  I initially tested
this by manually undoing the change[1] in my /etc/udhcpc.d/50default  Later I
was able to get an address by only removing the square brackets in the
conditional.  Some script testing indicated that a grep-based function in
square brackets was always the same value, but I don't understand the details
enough to say why.
