how long would it take to read the contacts from the card? From what I know the
number of entries is quite limited there but maybe my knowledge is a little bit
outdated.

Sounds like a solution that could work. Keeping the phoneserver as simple as
possible is a good idea indeed. Another solution I could imagine would be to
reduce the implementation in the phoneserver to the access to the SIM data and
move the complete handling of it into the enabler library.
In this case the library would buffer the sim data transparently. The only thing
you would have to work around in this case is the initial startup time.
In the address book application you can do this by showing the contacts stored
on the phone initially. It looks like some phones I have here do this. But this
only works properly if loading the data from teh sim does not take longer than a
few seconds.
