I understand that the situation for libmimidir is not that easy to understand, but you should know that you were searching "the wrong GPE" ;-)

This one is the latest release from GPE SVN (about three weeks old) and fixes a lot of bugs of the latest Gnome version.

libmimedir is not perfect, it still might lack support for some attributes and its error handling is quite bad. But it makes use of glib objects and it easy to get support for additional attributes, but a better error handling is a more complex task for improvement.
