This is now fixed: categories sync correctly for events, todos and contacts.  
New categories are created automatically during the sync if they are needed.

The fix is in svn.  It will appear in the next release (and in any daily 
builds dated 20070908 or higher).

This is not fixed.  A bug report either in the GPE bugzilla 
(http://bugs.linuxtogo.org/) or the OpenSync trac 
(http://www.opensync.org/newticket) would be a good idea.
