With Gary's help in reproducing the problem, I believe I have found the cause 
of the main problem (which is in libeventdb) and have logged the bug and a 
potential patch in bugzilla (bug 106).  

On the other hand, as this code is quite complex, I have not checked my fix in 
to SVN and would appreciate it if Neal could take a look to see if he thinks 
this is the correct solution.  It seems to work in my tests.
