I do not use (or know anything about) familiar. Are you using the latest
versions of gpesyncd (and the libraries it depends on) and opensync?

That might mean that is working. When you do the ssh command above you will
normally see no output (it is waiting for input from you). Try
entering "4:help" (without the quotes). You should see the help. Then
try "4:quit". You should see the gpesyncd exiting messages and get your
prompt back.
If that is working, I would check that gpesyncd can see the entries on your
handheld. Log in to the handheld using SSH and issue the gpesyncd command
(with no options). Use the three UIDLIST commands (UIDLIST VCARD, UIDLIST
VTODO, UIDLIST VEVENT) to check that gpesyncd can see the entries in your GPE
database. You can use the GET command to check a few entries to make sure
they look reasonable (GET VCARD nnn, where nnn is one of the numbers
displayed before the ":" from the UIDLIST command).
If all that is working then the problem seems to be at the Opensync end. Try
setting up a sync between GPE and filesync (with an empty directory). If
that doesn't work, post the output from that attempted sync.
