Sounds like the applet does not do the initialisation call to gpe which makes
sure this directory exists.

Summary: Import of vcard ignores BDAY field
Product: gpe-contacts
Version: 0.46
Platform: Nokia 770
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P4
Component: default
AssignedTo: gpe-bugs at linuxtogo.org

The gpe-contacts application appears to be capable of handling birthdays, but
it fails to correctly import a BDAY field if one is included in a vcard (see
RFC 2426).
To reproduce:
1. Create a vcard that contains the line:
BDAY:2001-01-01
2. Import the vcard.
3. View the contact. The birthday information is not included in the contact.
