yes sure, you can use quite some bits from GPE for that purpose. There are
several commercial projects building GTK based software stacks for mobile
devices so GPE can't be that wrong :-)

So far yes, but communication is more and more important. There is Bluetooth
communication tool (gpe-bluetooth), for telephony you can take a look at
Gomunicator and Minisip. Currently noone is woking on an email solution but that
could be easily done using Tinymail.
