iwconfig, please.

You may try also iwlist wlan0 scan to see, whether kernel communicates
with the card.

I am back at my Z. It's /etc/udev/scripts/network.sh where PATH may be
missing.

I do this as a work-around. pccardctl may do the same:
echo 1 >/sys/class/pcmcia_socket/pcmcia_socket1/card_eject
echo 1 >/sys/class/pcmcia_socket/pcmcia_socket1/card_insert
