You could try my intermediate solution:
After inserting of WLAN card, it scans for available networks and
chooses the best one. On the web, the wpa.conf is empty. See
wpa_supplicant docs for generating keys. You need bash installed.
It is still not nice, because it should recycle existing wireless
configuration instead of inventing its own configuration file for WPA
keys. I did not finished WEP stuff - I don't use any WEP AP.
Also note, that now it now works only after inserting the card and not
if you move outside of AP range.
It may also require adding of ifup/ifdown wlan0 into APM control
scripts, so you get your network rescanned (and firmware reflashed)
Ideally, there should be a small daemon for it communicating with user
space via D-BUS. NetworkManager should be able to handle such things,
but for PDA it is an overkill - it forces my Zaurus swapping for 20-30
sec every 5 minutes or so.
