I can also confirm that it works with a 2.6.23 kernel.
It did not build automatically as the defconfig-akita file did not contain the 
PXA_OVERLAY option and the patch did not get automatically applied. However 
patching manually made it work.

mplayer is playing it right (must be rotated in most cases, -vf rotate=1) 
giving -vo pxa as long as the movie does not exceed the resolution limits in 
which case one has to scale the movie before playing it.
