can you revert to the backup you took before upgrading?

(I ask with "tongue in cheek" because virtually nobody takes a backup,
not even an rsync snapshot of even their /etc/ directory before
updating/upgrading. I do take  a total rsync snapshot of a machine
before I wipe clean so's I can get back key config files)
