Indeed, a tar.bz2 is not an HD image. You need a .img file for that.
Remember that the images for the C3x00 are meant to be booted from the
microdrive, not flash. What you need to to is rename it to
hdimage1.tar.bz2 (I think) and put that on the card. It should format
and unzip to hda1.
