I experienced probably the same or very similar problem, when I used the
default /etc/wpa.conf with my keys added to the end of this (unchanged)
file - AP is associated, WPA is established, but no DHCP address exists.
I suspect that DHCP is called too early, and in most cases when WPA is
not yet established when DHCP daemon gives it up. Running
dhcpcd -i wlan0 manually works around this problem.

Problem needs deeper research to find the reason of this behavior.

Zeroconf should be completely independent on DHCP and uses different IP
range. But Zeroconf needs support from the AP and maybe some fixes to be
able to use it for WLAN instead of DHCP.

When I used my own additional association/WPA script, DHCP works:

Using "wpa" keys and password in the /etc/network/interfaces might help
as well.
