2.6.21 in both cases IIRC (desktop and h2200).

Just dropped the card in a ubuntu (dapper drake) laptop and it worked right
away -- it is 2.6.20-16

Definitely could be a kernel version problem - the hostap driver got moved
there in 2.6 I believe.
