OK, this was kind of expected. Useful because it confirms my thinking that the 
code could never have really worked in its current state :)

So just to check if I understand you correctly, is it the case that the cursor 
keys work as expected in portrait and not in landscape, or is it (as it 
sounds) a bit more complicated than that?
